Born in our favorite bowling alley, the idea became official in the winter of 2008. James and Teddy were bowling a few games, as was the normal daily activity when the friends were in town together. Andrew was out of town so his input had to be given via phone call and text message but a fantastic idea was hatched that night. A contract was written on a bar napkin with lines for all three to sign. James and Teddy penned their names in agreement, with Andrew's signature shortly following when he returned to Madison. The legal napkin detailed a vague, but exciting, plan for all three friends to pack their bags in the summer of 2010, after all had graduated, and head overseas for the trip of a lifetime. No exact dates or locales were given but, instead, a general idea that the three men would travel together, as friends, until such time as all funds were exhausted, at which time they would return to the states, memories abounding, and begin the next stages of their lives, whether that be graduate school or a fresh career. The napkin/contract currently resides with Teddy, on the wall of his room, but the pictures and exact wording are below. |

We, the undersigned, do pledge that our friendship will be everlasting, and, as such, we are guaranteeing that our plan, outlined below, will be undertaken.
Plan:
Upon graduation from college, graduation of everyone, we will embark on a European excursion to last no shorter than ___ months. The exact destinations and travel arrangements are completely unimportant. The important issue will remain that we do this together, as FRIENDS!

One may have thought our napkin and idea of a world wide excursion were
simply pipe dreams that would fade away with time, but one would be
mistaken entirely. Time only brought more and more excitement for a
trip over a year away. Every conversation had between the three
friends always found a way to turn to talk of the impending journey.
The trip would be coinciding perfectly with the 2010 World Cup and so
sights were set on South Africa for the first stop on the global tour.
Only one small problem with a trip to the World Cup; it's a tournament
of the highest caliber for a sport beloved around the world causing an
incredible demand for seats. Tickets could only be obtained through a
lottery system.
On March 30th, one day before the application deadline, Teddy
entered names and passport information for the three hopeful football
fanatics. As this article
reports, over 1.6 million tickets were requested during this first
application phase, dashing hopes that all, if any, tickets would be
won. (Teddy had tried through the same process to get tickets to the
2006 World Cup in Germany and been denied).
However, on the morning of Friday, April 24th, 2009, while laying
on the couch recovering from a long day and night of Drake Relays,
Teddy opened up an email from FIFA on his phone and staring back at him
was the confirmation he had only dreamed of; he and his two best
friends had literally won the lottery! 3 tickets to 6 six matches, to
follow the USA as far as they go plus a second round, quarter final and
semi-final match no matter who advances. Happiness and extreme elation
rushed into Teddy's soul as he lept from the couch screaming for joy.
After confirming that he had in fact been awarded the tickets, Teddy
proceded to tell anyone that would listen, call his parents, call his
two best friends and print out the confirmation.
The boys officially had their first destination! | |

South Africa
We have tickets to six matches, however we will not know the locations until December when the official draw is held. Here is a link to the full match schedule and below is a map of all the stadiums (click the soccer icons to find out a little more about each). Because we have tickets to matches that span the duration of the tournament, we will be in South Africa for a full month. At present we do not have any specific plans on where we will stay or what we will do so we welcome any and all advice or suggestions!
